Charlson Bredehoft Cohen & Brown attorney David E. Murphy is quoted in this Law 360 article, “Va. Justices Affirm Award In Racial Harassment, Stalking Case”. On April 15, 2021, the Virginia Supreme Court affirmed a $250,000 jury verdict to a Black man who worked as an independent contractor for a remodeling company whose white owner used racial epithets and engaged in stalking behavior. The Court held that evidence consisting solely of mental anguish, emotional distress, and humiliation are sufficient to support a jury’s award of compensatory damages.
